Cause
Down Syndrome is caused by having three number 21 chromosomes instead of two. This is also known as a trisomy.
Incidence
1 in every 1,000 babies born have Down's Syndrome. Each year, in the UK alone, around 750 babies are born with Down's Syndrome.
Effects
Effects from Down's Syndrome include;
- reduced muscle tone leading to floppiness
- eyes that slant upwards and outwards
- learning disabilities
- a small nose and flat nasal bridge
- a small mouth
- a big space between the first and second toe (sandal gap)
- broad hands with short fingers
- delayed development, i.e. sitting, walking, talking
- possible health issues later in life
Living with it
As of yet, there is no cure but there is treatment for the syndrome. This includes speech therapy, learning support at school, physiotherapy and other doctor visits.
Hope for the future
Scientists are making progress in a cure for Down's syndrome and many with the syndrome are able to lead semi-normal and independent lives.
